Emerging Developments in Postsecondary Organization Theory and Research: Fragmentation or Integration

MARVIN W. PETERSON

The University of Michigan

Developments in theory and research on postsecondary institutions as organizations are proceeding in many different directions, threatening to fragment this critical area of research. This article examines the major developments and identifies dilemmas in theory development, research methods, organizational behavior context, relating theory to practice, and identifying professional colleagues. These areas need to be understood and addressed to assure the continued, integrated development of postsecondary organization theory and research.
